I came out during my first year of an undergraduate degree in English Literature and I am now about to start a new university for the second time, this time as a postgraduate student studying MA in creative writing.

It was a hard, yet positive journey, and I learned a lot along the way.

Here are some things I learned from my first time at university.

Lesson 1: You are never alone

Even though the odds are against it, there are many other trans people at uni.

I may have been very lucky, but I had a small group of trans friends on campus who helped me out.

However, there’s usually no way to find out if you might be talking with a transgender person without being very rude (asking if someone is trans is rude and does not help make friends).

And, it’s not just my generation of trans people in higher education; others have been there before us.

This isn’t just about the arts, either.
